via The Guardian:
The elder Gutiérrez reportedly said he overheard Ice agents saying that his son had not been the person they had come to get.
“The officers grabbed him and two other boys right at the entrance to our building. One said: ‘No, he’s not the one,’ like they were looking for someone else. But the other said: ‘Take him anyway,’” he recalled.
Gutiérrez has no criminal record either in Venezuela or the US, his family said. He also did not have any tattoos, which is a feature that US law enforcement often use to link people to the Tren de Aragua gang – a transnational criminal organization from Venezuela – and to justify their expulsions from the country.
Despite this, Gutiérrez was arrested and later deported to El Salvador, to which he has no ties.
“Take him anyway.” My god, how deep is the rot inside of ICE?
No one at ICE seems to have any qualms about carrying out despicable and illegal orders (I have not read about any ICE employees resigning in protest, have you? Crickets) It’s clear that ICE has leadership and cultural issues which cannot be fixed by simply electing a new President. These people didn’t get hired in the last couple of months; they have been waiting patiently for the Fascist-In-Chief to return and give the green light to unleash their worst instincts.
If we are ever able to send someone new to the White House, along with an agreeable Congress, ICE should be abolished and rebuilt with different people and values. Raze the entire department to the ground and start over. We should even change the name. It won’t be the only federal agency that will require a purge.
The important takeaway of the Gutiérrez tragedy (and Abrego Garcia, and Bachir Atallah, and Rumeysa Ozturk, and so many others…): this can happen to anyone. Resist.
