It Begins

We knew it was coming, and here it is:

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday requiring people to provide documents proving they are citizens when they register to vote, a mandate that experts said could prevent millions of Americans from voting.

Keep in mind (hi, Washington Post and New York Times and others who keep reporting this) that Trump cannot require any such thing via executive order. The Constitution delegates administration of elections to the states, though it does allow for Congress to step in and provide some oversight via legislation. Trump continues to believe that he can simply manifest new powers unto himself, and nobody seems to have the fortitude to stop him.

Just a reminder that election fraud is not a thing. Casual voter fraud? Sure, that happens. Somebody casts the absentee ballot of their deceased spouse, or attempts to vote provisionally in multiple precincts – there are usually 3-4 of these prosecuted after every election. They are also incredibly rare, and relatively easy to catch (our system has lots of effective safeguards!). But the kind of widespread, heavily organized election conspiracies that Trump and his flunkeys keep trying to manifest via shouting on FOX News simply does not exist. Migrants are not flocking across our borders in order to participate in elections in exchange for Soros cash. Democrats are not stuffing ballot boxes with nary a witness nor paper trail.

Trump’s order, if it were to be executed, would disenfranchise millions of legal voters. How do we know this? Look at the chaos from the most recent local elections in my state of New Hampshire. And that’s the point. Republicans have long conspired, openly, to use every mechanism of power available to suppress votes.

I know this, because I used to be one of them.

Anyway, this is one more step toward autocracy, the big one that I warned you about some months ago.

Resist.
