It’s inauguration day in the United States, and the former president has returned to power. We all have legitimate concerns about the potential consequences, but one thing is certain: chaos is likely to ensue. His first term was characterized by constant chaos, and it was the only thing that garnered significant attention. Take a look at cable news ratings from 2016 to 2020—the networks reveled in the chaos. However, it’s important to remember that this chaos was merely a distraction from the real issues at hand. Beneath the surface of the chaos, Trump’s lackeys were able to accomplish much of their damage. Therefore, it’s crucial to consider the following:
Distractions which do not matter1
- Transgender sports participation
- Withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords
- Pardons for January 6th insurrectionists
- TikTok
- Elon giving Nazi salutes
- Elimination of birthright citizenship
- Pretty much everything!
The only thing that truly matters in the next four years is ensuring that the United States continues to have free and fair elections. That’s it. Period.
Without free and fair elections (and the subsequent peaceful transfer of power) nothing else matters. I cannot emphasize that part enough. Without free and fair elections, none of your beliefs can be realized. Rights you once thought you had may no longer apply to you.
Currently, far-right Christofascists control all the levers of power and influence at the federal level. However, if free and fair elections persist, their hold on power can be temporary. Their influence, laws, regulations, and even Supreme Court precedents can be rendered ephemeral, but only as long as we have free and fair elections*.
Yes, other issues matter, but none of them matter if you do not wield power.
Keep voting. Vote for individuals who prioritize free and fair elections. It’s not just about legislative seats; local election officials and judges also play a crucial role. Advocate for transparency in election administration. Express your concerns through letters, filing comments, and maintaining public scrutiny of any attempts to unfairly favor the far right.
In 2020, Trump’s defeat was a testament to the power of individuals who believed in free and fair elections. They prioritized the country over their party affiliation. If the far right continues to wield power unabated, that path might be permanently closed for the 2028 election.
Never stop fighting.
These things do matter but not as much as elections. Without the latter, the former does not stand a chance within a Christofascist autocracy. ↩︎
